Real Balance

What changes when you move to real money.

Prepare for the psychological difference between demo and a real account.

Real Balance

On demo

  • On demo — A loss is received as information

On real money

  • On real money — A loss is received as a loss, and the urge to win it back appears

The mechanics on a real account do not change: the same instruments, the same buttons, the same payout. One thing changes — the cost of a mistake becomes real. And that alone is enough to send behaviour off course.

On demo
— A loss is received as information
On real money
— A loss is received as a loss, and the urge to win it back appears

The typical symptoms of the first days on real money: a hand reaching to close the platform after the first minus; wanting to raise the amount after a plus; trades appearing that were not in the plan.

  1. 01The first two weeks — minimum trade size
  2. 02The daily limit is set before the platform is opened
  3. 03No more than 3-5 trades a day
  4. 04The journal is filled in before entering, not after
  5. 05Any breach of the limit ends the trading day

Treat the first weeks on a real balance as a continuation of the learning. The goal of this period is not to earn but to prove to yourself that the rules hold when the money is real.

A note from Leon Mercer Academy

Write the daily limit in money rather than percent and keep the figure in front of you. “−$5” stops you better than an abstract “5%”.

Key takeaways

  • The mechanics do not change — the psychology does.
  • The first two weeks: minimum trade size and a hard daily limit.
  • The goal of the starting period is following the rules, not profit.

The usual mistake

Carrying the trade size over from a demo where the balance was ten times larger. It is the first thing that breaks discipline.

A practical example

A real start from $100: a trade size of $1–2, a daily limit of −$5, five trades maximum. A weekly result inside ±$10 is normal.

The goal of the week is stated as “no breach of the limit”, not “finish in profit”.

On risk

On a real account you can lose the whole deposit — not part of it, all of it. Do not put money there that you need to live on.
